Say what, an RS3 Sportback heading our shores in 2011?
Once I had a dream.... in my dream, I saw a successor to Audi´s seminal and le-gen-dary - RS2 Avant. Finally my friends, in 2011 this dream will come true. Audi has released the name of the successor to the super quick RS2 Avant. Now you may ask which car will be quicker than the le-gen-dary Avant supercar-killer?
Give Audi engineers an 'R'...... Give them an 'S'........and yessss ..... Give them a '3'.... Combine this with a Sportback and we have our little RS3 Sports package that is much quicker than the original RS2 Avant supercar-killer!
Ingolstadt recently regained its focus on high-performance five-cylinder engines. The new RS3 Sportback is the second platform to benefit from the change in focus. South Africans be prepared, as the RS3 is due to go on sale by the 3rd quarter of 2011.
The RS3 is powered by the same 2.5 in-line engine found in the TT-RS - this should revolutionise the performance parameters of compact station-wagons forever. Especially, if one takes into account that Subaru´s Impreza station wagon with WRX badging is no longer being produced.
The most exciting thing for most fans will be the fact that the new Sportback will be the first A3 model to receive Audi´s honouree RS performance badge!
So how does one distinguish between the RS3 Sportback and its little sporty brother the S3? Well, you will notice composite sills, aluminium side-mirror casings in matte finish, a glossy rear diffuser and an elaborate spoiler for the roof.
Carrying 235/35 rubber at the front and tracked by 225/35 rubber at the rear, the RS3 Sportback´s cast aluminium alloy rims are an inch larger than the 18 inch rims of the S3.
The RS3 Sportback gets an asymmetrical look by grouping the dual-exhaust system´s ends to the left of the bumper´s lower fascia.
Even though the RS3 Sportback has a 60kg weight penalty compared to the S3, the engine still ensures for plenty ´oomph´ with the neatly rounded outputs of 450Nm and 250KW. Our friends at Audi say that the RS3 Sportback is able to do 0-100km/h in only 4.6 seconds with the help of the latest 7-speed DSG transmission. This beats the original RS2 Avant´s time by a whopping 0.2 seconds.
Running 1.2 bar of boost, the 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder engine with direct-injection, combines forced induction with an unusually high compression ratio of 10:1. This benefits efficiency and enables an average fuel consumption of 9.1 litres per 100km.
Furthermore to ensure a high level of agility to its rampant straight-line performance, the RS3´s front wheels are spaced 42mm further apart than the S3. In order for better oscillation control, the shock-absorbers for each wheel were recalibrated.
A nifty RS3 Sportback feature that will appeal to all boy racers - is the digital lap timer to record and prove the success of your trackday adventures. So what about stopping power during your excursions? Well, the front brake discs are 370mm in diameter which is 25mm larger than the S3´s.
If you are one of those who chooses to stand out from the crowd, the following range of options will most definitely appeal to you. Options include styling packages in black or matt aluminum, roof rails with a matt aluminum finish and bucket seats.
