Audi Tribute - An All New Quattro Concept
Ingolstadt´s, Audi, showcased its latest concept in Paris - 30 years after the first Quattro had its debit at the Geneva motor show.
The new Quattro concept is based on the Audi RS5 (which was launched in October 2010 in SA) and makes this show car a spiritual successor to the Sport Quattro from 1984.
The concept car´s body has been significantly overhauled to include aluminum body panels and carbon-fibre components to now make it a two-seater. According to Audi, the weight (of 1300kg) of the new concept is the same weight as the 1984 Quattro concept. We can expect to see technologies developed for this concept to filter into future Audi production vehicles.
Furthermore, a lighter but turbocharged inline five (lifted from the potent TT RS) was used instead of the RS5´s eight-cylinder engine. The 2.5-litre FSI turbo used in the Quattro concept generates 480Nm from 1600rpm and 300kW from 5400-6500rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h takes only 3.9sec.
A six-speed manual transmission is used to drive all wheels. The key to the new permanent all-wheel drive is a crown-gear centre differential that is smaller and lighter. The differential can better vary the distribution of power between the front and rear wheels, which improves the Quattro system´s reaction time down to milliseconds.
The new Quattro concept most certainly looks the part, as well as having all its important matters beneath the metal too.
The roof is lowered by around 40mm compared with the RS5 to give the car overall dimensions of 4.28m (length), 1.86m (width) and 1.33m (height). Its wheelbase has also been shortened by 150mm and the rear overhang has been reduced by 200mm - resulting in a more balanced profile.
The rimless single-frame grille, prominent front air intakes and motorsport-inspired centre-locking, seven twin-spoked, 20" rims, certainly makes the car look a lot more assertive. The drilled carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs with six-pot calipers allows for proper stopping power.
The two bucket seats have been equipped with three or four-point safety belts and each seat weighs 18kg. The instrument cluster is entirely digital and leather finishes and carbon fiber dominate. Audi engineers replaced the traditional MMI central display with a 3D display
Many other cabin finishes are reminiscent of the 1980´s Ur-Quattro.
